Soil Components

What are some good sources (other then TBS) for soil components in the GTA? I'm looking mainly in the Northern (Thornhill/Markham) area? I need components such as granular composted bark (I don't have a wood chipper to make those massive pieces smaller), leaf/pine mould, haydite/turface, and humus. I can't seem to find this stuff anywhere (I've checked Sheriden and other nurserys most carry ready-mixes which are heavy in peat).

Hi Aaron,

I know that Kim's Nature, located at Major MacKenzie and Hwy. 48 in Markham carries bonsai soil containing fine wood chips. But you should call first (number listed in the 'Vendors' section on the TBS website.

There is a soil mixing workshop coming up in March, led by Mike and Gim (register with Otmar ). I'm sure they could help you find the components you need.

Hi Aaron,

OK, here's the deal: these components are available, but not locally and not in small quantities. So the bulk price and packaging them would be considered too expensive and labour-intensive for most individuals and commercial nurseries. That's why the club makes mixes available; and it's good to have bonsai nurseries around, like Kim's Nature, The Bonsai House, Shibui, The Bonsai Pottery, and Mike's, which are listed in the 'Vendors' section on our website. Contact these people and they can offer you some the components that you are looking for.

There is merit in being a do-it-yourselfer, though. Leaf mould (remember Nakamura's recommendation?) is all around you: the oak and pine leaves just need to be collected and treated properly before you use them. Think "sterile", though, before using it. There are alternatives for organic material available. Just make sure you screen for the size of particle.
