The Michigan All-State Bonsai Show 2002 (MABA),
by Mollie Hollar
2002 brings the fourth year of the Michigan All-State Bonsai Show on Saturday and
Sunday, July 13 & 14 at Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI. This educational
show features a
large exhibit by all
six Michigan bonsai
organizations;
workshops, demonstrations
and slide
lectures by Masters
and experts; five or
six vendors from all
over the Midwest
with a wide selection
of plants and
bonsai-related
items; and ongoing
demonstrations
by Michigan
club members.
Presenters who have been confirmed so far are headliner Ben Oki from California,
who is curator for the prestigious bonsai collection at the Huntington Library there. He began
his bonsai study in 1958, working with Master John Naka. Ben is best known for his
rugged free-form style, fine detail work, and whirlwind wiring technique. His demonstration
and workshop will both be on large conifers (type to be determined). He will be doing individual
drawings of participants' trees during his workshop. In addition, Ben will do individual
consultations Sunday from 9:00 AM to Noon and 1:30 to 4:30 PM. For these consultations,
the registrant will bring in three or four trees (per hour) and Ben will do a critique of the trees.
See the registration form at the end of this article to register
for an hour or more of individual consultation
time with Ben Oki.
Also conducting a workshop will
be Ivan Watters from Chicago, working
with white pines. Jack Wikle, from Ann
Arbor MI, will do his slide presentation entitled
"Things I Wish I Had Known as a Beginning
Bonsai Enthusiast." Jack Douthitt,
from Wisconsin, will be doing a workshop
and a tree critique. And for the first time,
children's workshops will be conducted
both days of the show.
Other points of interest at the show will be
an on-going pot-making demonstration with
pots for sale, and a table where new plant
owners can work with an experienced bonsai
person in styling and potting their new
tree. On-going tree demonstrations will be
carried out throughout the weekend in Meijer
Gardens' atrium.
Come to Grand Rapids for a great weekend
adventure in bonsai! For more information,
