The Journal And The TBS Web Site

by Dierk Neugebauer

WANTED!

Copies of old Toronto Bonsai Journals

Wouldn't it be great if we had a set of archives that members could peruse and research?

No such resource exists today!

I would like to receive your old, no longer read, journals for just such an archive. ... and if you value them, as I suspect you do, then I would like to borrow them so that copies can be made.

Please bring your offereings to the next meeting and give them to me, your editor; include your name and phone number, and whether you want them returned or not.

Your Journal and your web site have grown so significantly over the years that it has become difficult to keep track of information collected or written by members in the past. It is particularly surprising that an organization such as ours has not kept track systematically of all of our efforts in these areas in the past. Thus, opportunities for volunteers who wish to contribute to either of these now exist. Don't miss out on this opportunity!

The following "task opportunities" beg your involvement:

  • pictures - I would like a couple of members to be available with digital cameras to take pictures at meetings, workshops, etc. - if one is absent the other would be able to record the event - captions to go with the images and/or a small writeup would be great as well
  • web sleuth - much information related to bonsai is available on the internet - this info needs to be discovered, checked out, and if suitable for publishing, permission needs first be sought to do so - a great opportunity for research
  • prompter - many members have beautiful trees and much knowledge but are reluctant to volunteer themselves for the good of all - there is a certain irony here - I need help in coaxing Journal contributions from them
  • archivist - I would like us to have an archive of past journals as expressed in the ad above - perhaps this could be available through our library services to the membership or through the Journal editor - much has been written in the past, and nowhere do we seem to have a record of these contributions
  • index - a listing of what's been published by us, and how/where it can be accessed would be helpful as well
  • transcriptions - I would like us to make audio recordings of speakers and workshop leaders so that their information can be published for non-attending members and posted on our web site as well
  • site map - someone with internet experience might be able to create a site map of our web site, which has become rather large - a site map aids in navigation
  • a meta woman or man - internet search engines rely on special "meta" tags to find us - our web site needs attention in this area rather desperately

Please remember that our club is only as good as our individual involvement!
