A Brief History of the Toronto Bonsai Society
The Toronto Bonsai Society was started in 1957 by a very small group of people who had then just discovered bonsai. This fledgling organization, through the perseverance and dedication of its founding members, quickly grew, and because many of the members were affiliated with other horticultural groups, was reasonably successful in spreading the joy of bonsai. After the humble beginnings the Society now has about 170 members drawn from the rich ethnic mosaic of Toronto and surrounding area.
A non-profit organization, the Society is dedicated to the teaching and promotion of the horticultural art of bonsai and related subjects, such as suiseki. The principles of bonsai art are taught through regular monthly meetings, periodic workshops and lectures, the latter of which are provided by the Society s senior members and visiting internationally renowned Masters, such as John Y. Naka of California, the 1986 recipient of the Fifth Class Order of the Rising Sun, awarded by Emperor Hirohito to of Japan.
Through its annual exhibitions and seasonal display at spring and fall horticultural events, the Society brings the results of its teachings and activities to the attention of the public at large, thereby facilitating and promoting interest in this horticultural art form. In 1985, the Society staged 4 exhibitions lasting a total of 10 days.
The Society communicates with its members through the publication of a monthly newsletter generally containing about 10 pages of articles on bonsai matters.
The Society maintains contact with other bonsai organizations in North America, and several of its members belong to the Nippon Bonsai Association. Members attend national and international exhibitions and conventions, and many of them have appeared as guest speakers at sister clubs and societies both in Canada and the United States.
