Re: Bonsai Display Stands

(TBS Journal, Mar '04),

by Terry Lund

During one of our Bonsai Shows two well known bonsaists from the U.S. made known their feelings about displaying bonsai without any stand at all. Their point was that a muddy old board was better than none at all and that all bonsai were required to have some sort of stand, or were barred from their shows.

I agree.

Stands, containers and bonsai are all part of a visual presentation. The plant is of primary importance, second is the container, and third is the stand. Size and styling is important to all three elements although unobtrusive stands seem to work better than ornate models.

Best of luck in formulating "rules" for stands. Personal preference seems to rule most displays.

I have several stands ranging from thick tree trunk or root slabs, to delicate-legged cascade stands. The stand should not impact the viewer more than the bonsai & pot combination.

Good taste?
