General meeting April 2003, reported by Jeff Shortt

The 7:00 p.m. lecture was conducted by John Walton, and the topic was: the Care of Tools. John took the membership through an informative and entertaining hour of this important subject; from different types of sharpening stones and devices and their maintenance, to sharpening techniques, with some timely and helpful advice on where these items may be obtained. John has considerable expertise in this area, and was quick to offer some of his resourcefulness and tricks for those special problems which arise from time to time.

For the latter half of the meeting, several members had brought in trees to work on. This always generates interest, and the designers were in abundance to offer opinions. There was general agreement that the Toronto winter had been quite harsh, and that people were beginning to find the toll this had taken on their collections. This should make for a frenzy of purchases and acquisitions this spring.

The INDEX of articles that have been published in the Journal in the past has been updated to reflect the latest donations of old issues. The list already contains about 600 entries, and is not yet nearly complete, since our archives are missing a significant number of older issues. You might check out the February 2003 issue of the Journal to find out just which issues are still missing, and if possible, respond to the appeal I am making there.

Meanwhile, you can view the index in two formats on this web site right now when you click on the "Journal" button above: one listing is alphabetical by author, and the other is chronological (more or less) by year.

The meeting of November, 2002, by Jeff Shortt

Member actively engaged in another exercise involving four trees. It was based on the October activity; numbering different areas of the base to choose as the front, and several branches to select for styling. Members were invited to fill out forms outlining their opinions and choices, to be compared later to the experts¼ final judgement.

Each tree was then brought to the front separately and discussed for final styling by different senior members of the club; namely, Reiner Goebel, John Biel, Jerry Vlchek, and Arthur Skolnik. Much heated debate ensued from the varying philosophies of these eminent individuals, to the enjoyment of the crowd.

Later, there followed a styling workshop on Grewia, during which there was a very successful raffle of a Blauwwi Juniper, donated by John Biel.

The meeting of October, 2002, by Jeff Shortt

The beginners' meeting was conducted by Reiner Goebel, who gave an informative talk on overwintering trees. This is particularly important, given the climatic conditions in Canada.

The announcements included a reminder to members of the pending trip to Bonsai Discovery, a new and unique nursery dedicated solely to bonsai - the first in the Greater Toronto Area. The proprietor is looking forward to meeting the club members and is giving a barbecue and sale of material on October 20.

The club executive then offered a different exercise for the membership. Placing a pine tree at the front with various numbers and letters attached to selected branches and possible fronts, members were invited to come and consider possible styling solutions for the tree during the coffee break, writing them down on a handout with multiple choice questions.

Reiner and John Biel proceeded then to give a demonstration on their solution, styling the tree and giving commentary explaining their rationale. The membership were allowed to question and compare their solutions to the final result.

After the demonstration, members broke out into groups to finish a workshop on blauwwi junipers begun in the September meeting, with general commentary by onlookers.

Sometime this January all of the Journal issues for the year 2001 will be removed from the web site to make way for the year 2003. Particularly relevant articles written by our members will be moved to the special Archives section. The rest will be abandoned in cyberspace. A word to the wise is sufficient.

Unfortunately the company which hosts our web site has experienced technical problems this week; these difficulties resulted in the loss of all of our files (there are about 30 megabytes of files in this site). It has taken some time to get at the root of the problem and to replace the missing files. Let's hope that such an occurrence will not happen again.

If you discover any problems with the site, please send me an email about the problem - be as specific as you can be.

HELP Wanted For The "TBS" Web Site

A site map of the site would be useful to have. Right now we have approximately 300 pages in this site. Does anyone have a relatively easy way of creating a "Site Map" which would be another useful navigational tool to have? If you can help, please send me email.
